Scriptography
Scriptography
The Scriptography series began with the idea of making large layered fluid paintings inspired by the encaustic series Calligraphitti. This series is a further exploration of the use of handwriting in art, as image in itself, using the symbolic intuitive connection of word forms between eye to brain.
I have been working with writing as imagery for over five years. This developed after a series of work about geometric symbols. Writing is a natural outgrowth of geometry as word forms are also geometric, primarily being formed from circles squares and triangles. Early letterforms were derived from shapes from nature that were simplified and abstracted into these geometric shapes over time. I think the mark of the hand in handwriting is very important when used as an element in art. The energy and intuitive symbolic gestures form a foundation for abstract art.
These mixed media paintings use acrylic and other water based media such as graphite, sumi ink, and crayons, on canvas with Japanese kozo papers.
March 2-31 “Scriptography” is on exhibit at K Saari Gallery, 837 Lincoln. Steamboat Springs,CO. A selection of these paintings is featured along with encaustics in the Calligraphitti series.
